Range Bag Essentials
Oct 01, 2023
When heading to the range, it's important to have a well-equipped range bag packed with all the necessary gear. Having the right tools and equipment can not only enhance your shooting experience and ensure safety, it can make you a valuable asset for those who arent as prepared. Lets explore some essential items that I think should be in your range bag.
Get Organized
Before diving into the list of essentials, let's talk about the bag youre going to carry your gear in. A good range bag should have ample space to accommodate all your gear while keeping it well-organized. Look for a bag with multiple compartments and pockets to help you easily locate specific items. Additionally, choose a bag made from durable materials to withstand the rigors of frequent use and travel. I have tons of bags, but there are a few companies I like in particular such as Fehu because Collin is my buddy and a good guy that makes these by hand. There are others too, but shops like Brownells, Sportsmans Warehouse, might have more options.
Eyes and Ears
Prioritizing safety is essential. Packing a quality pair of shooting glasses and hearing protection or earplugs to protect your eyes and ears can help you hear and see longer. Moreover, it's not unusual for people (including myself at times in the past) to forget them and having some on hand can save a trip for not only yourself, but fellow enthusiasts. I like to keep a bag of foamies in the truck after finding myself asking for some more than once. Heres what I have as backups Foamies
Not only are shooting glasses important but so are sun glasses. I have heard that a lot of headaches from pressure are actually being increased by pressure that can be diverted some while wearing glasses so not only is it protection from light, glare, dust, debris, but also pressure. My favorite brand is Bajio sunglasses, but whatever floats your boat is better than a headache.
Targets
Clearly I prefer RifleKraft targets, but having a few options on hand ensures you can practice different shooting techniques and I always carry some sticker targets in the event I forget a stapler or something happens and I can still slap a sticker up and get to doing what I went to do.
Ammunition
Bring enough ammunition, this sounds obvious but I have forgotten this more than once. Maybe its just me..
I stock up on the factory ammo I like from mile high because they get large lot numbers and I can get enough to last a while.
Tool Kit
Proper maintenance of your firearms is essential to keep them in optimal condition. A compact toolkit with torque wrenches, bits, cleaning rods, brushes, lubricants, and patches will help you keep your guns clean and functional during and after your range sessions. I carry Fix it Sticks because not only are the kits nice and compact, they have more than what I need and I seem to need a lot all the time.
First Aid Kit
Accidents can happen, even in controlled environments like shooting ranges. Be prepared by including a basic first aid kit in your range bag. It should have the essentials like bandages, antiseptic wipes, gloves, and any personal medication you may need. Check out Dark Angel Medical
Water, Snacks, Sunscreen
Staying hydrated and fueled during a shooting session is crucial for maintaining focus and energy. Keep a water bottle and some snacks in your range bag to keep yourself refreshed throughout the day. Sunscreen, just do it.
Notebook and Pen
Lastly, don't forget to pack a small Field Book and pen to jot down any important information.
Wrap Up
Having a well-equipped range bag is essential for any shooting enthusiast. Remember to include eye and ear protection, targets, ammunition, a cleaning kit, first aid kit, tools, water, snacks, and a notebook / pen. These essentials will make your shooting experience more enjoyable, safe, and convenient; they will also make you an asset for others. So pack your bag, head to the range, and have a great time honing your shooting skills!
